The Podcast, Ep 4: Bad Tango, Good Story
New podcast episode! Let's make a brand new story, in real time.
Guess what? The Story Letter is the featured new show in Performing Arts on Apple Podcasts this week! Maybe you want to go over there, admire the feature and then write a quick review? You can also now tell your friends you listen to “The Story Letter, as featured on Apple Podcasts.” Which is, you know, cooler.
Hi friends! New podcast episode:
Episode 4: Bad Tango, Good Story
Let’s get tactical! This week I’m breaking down the three key elements that turn a story idea into a capital-S Story: context, stakes, and change. Plus you’ll hear these tools in action as I workshop a brand new story live, sharing my thought process and decisions along the way.
I loved doing this episode because it’s a little bit scary, as someone who tells stories for my job, to tell you a story that I hadn’t practiced or really figured out. But scary can be fun. Also, when I teach teachers how to teach storytelling, we talk a lot about “walking the walk.” Basically, if you’re going to ask your students to do something vulnerable, you should be ready to do it yourself, too. So that’s what I’m doing. Deep breath. Here we go!

This week’s prompt:
Take a story idea of your own and ask yourself those three questions: What’s the context we need? What’s at stake for you? And how did this experience change things for you, a little or a lot?

Just shared this wonderful episode with a friend who has been taking dance lessons, including tango, for years. She will now be a subscriber!
Such a satisfying story workshop presentation and so motivating!! My friend and I are both retired academics--story tellers about the plights of refugees and English learners in classrooms for audiences that feel pretty dry and distant. We are both energized by the deeply intuitive process of crafting stories and stoked by Micaela's straightforward guidance. Love!
